Durgapur is a planned urban agglomeration and an industrial hub, established in the late 1950s. It was designed by architects Bidhan Chandra Roy, Joseph Allen Stein, and Benjamin Polk. The city stands on the northern bank of the Damodar River and is a major center for producing steel and manufacturing train wheels. In recent years, Durgapur has also emerged as a hub for the IT industry.
