Jaisalmer is a city located in the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan. It is known by several nicknames, including "The Golden City," "The Yellow City," and "Swarna Nagari." These names reflect the yellowish sandstone used in its architecture and the golden hues of the surrounding Thar Desert, particularly at sunrise and sunset. Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal of the Bhati clan of Rajputs. It served as a medieval trading center and is situated in the heart of the Thar Desert. The city is crowned by the Jaisalmer Fort, a World Heritage Site, which is a sprawling hilltop citadel made of yellow sandstone. Many of the houses and temples within the fort and the town are also built from finely sculptured yellow sandstone.
