Situated at an average elevation of 2,676 meters (8,780 feet) along the banks of the Suru River, Kargil is located approximately 204 kilometers east of Srinagar and 234 kilometers west of Leh. The region experiences a temperate climate, characterized by hot summers with cool nights and long, chilly winters where temperatures can drop below -20 °C.
