Mughalsarai is an important railway junction, once recognized for having Asia's largest railway marshalling yard. Historically, it served as a significant halting place for Mughal caravans along the Grand Trunk Road. The city is also notable as the birthplace of former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
